There was a branch of Little Chef at Bodelwyddan, on the original route of the A55, which opened in the 1970s and closed when the new road opened in 1986. The building went on to become home to the Kinmel Park Golf Club, with part of the building being home to Spice of India for a time.

Planning and Opening

Following the closure of the Bodelwyddan branch, plans were put forward for a dual-sided service area on the new bypass. Kinmel Park Wood services opened in January 1988, named after the adjacent woodland, and it initially included an Esso filling station on either side of the new dual carriageway.

Both filling stations were soon joined by the Little Chef restaurants, with an official opening ceremony held for the eastbound Little Chef restaurant on 9 May 1988, attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Bodelwyddan.

On 26 March 1992, the then-MasterChef host Loyd Grossman worked at the eastbound Little Chef restaurant for the day as part of a nationwide Trading Places scheme for charity.

Recent Developments

Both filling stations were formerly operated by Esso directly and included their Snack & Shop offering. They were acquired by Euro Garages in 2010 who replaced the Snack & Shop stores with SPAR stores.

Both restaurants closed on 26 September 2012, as part of a vast cull of Little Chef restaurants. The buildings were later acquired by Euro Garages, and reopened as Starbucks stores in 2013. Both sides also gained Ecotricity electric vehicle charging points in 2015, but these were later replaced with EG Group's 'EV Point' branded chargers in 2023.

Both sides gained a bespoke Greggs unit within each car park in 2019, with eastbound opening in March and westbound in May. The westbound store was EG Group's first 'pop-up' store, and took less than two months to design, build and install.

Both forecourts transferred into the Asda estate in March 2024, with both sides relaunching with new Asda Express stores. The westbound side relaunched on 20 March, with the eastbound side following on 27 March.
