Trivia and History

Esso petrol station.
Chiverton Cross Esso stands next to Three Burrows.

Chiverton Cross was a crossroads where the present, smaller roundabout is. There was a large garage on the corner which is now the used car dealership.

Other facilities arrived after the roundabout was built in the 1980s, replacing three cottages. In 1988, the Chiverton Cross branch of Little ChefHistory opened. In 1998, the Little Chef was joined by a Burger King. In 2008 those closed, and became a Starbucks store.

Two filling stations continue to operate side-by-side. The first was an Esso filling station with Snack & Shop store named Chiverton Cross, while the second was branded Elf and called Three Burrows.

In 1998, there were plans to add a picnic area and drive-thru restaurant to the Three Burrows site but this never happened.

In 2003, Three Burrows became a Total site following the merger of Elf with TotalFina. The shop went onto become branded as a Premier store.

In 2011, Three Burrows was re-branded Esso, creating the unusual situation where two seemingly identical petrol stations trade side-by-side. In the same year, Chiverton Cross was removed from Ordnance Survey maps where it had been listed as a full service area.

In 2012, Both forecourts were acquired by MRH. In 2018, these were transferred to MFG following the merger of the two companies.

In 2013, planning permission was granted to demolish the car sales showroom adjacent to the filling stations and build a 67-bed hotel with restaurant however this was never built. A subsequent plan in 2015 was also approved which would see the car sales showroom turned into a restaurant with the rear of the building maintained as workshop garages. Eventually, in 2019, a Rowe's Cornish Bakers store was added.

In January 2018, Cornwall Council granted planning permission to demolish both filling stations and replace them with one single, larger petrol station. In August 2019, further proposals for a hotel and restaurant development adjacent to the current filling stations was granted.

As part of the project to upgrade the A30, by 2024 the Chiverton Cross Roundabout will be closed. Access to the service area will be provided via the new Chiverton junction, approximately half a mile down the B3277. It's not yet known whether the road signs will promote the new entrance, or whether the diversion will impact trade.
