Trivia and History
The service area started out as a garage which provided fuel facilities, and was built next to the original Carland Cross crossroads in the 1970s on the original alignment of the A30. The site is now accessed from the new roundabout.
The original garage was demolished in 1991 and replaced with a Shell forecourt in the position it is in today. At the same time, Trusthouse Forte proposed to build a restaurant next to the new forecourt but this was never built.
Instead, in 1997, plans for a car sales showroom were put forward by Toyota but planning permission was refused. Toyota eventually went onto build a showroom here in the early 2000s.
Shell added a Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging bay to the forecourt in 2020.
The Carland Cross Roundabout was replaced by a flyover in June 2024. The service area has now gone from being at the corner of a very busy roundabout, to being positioned at a more typical junction layout. The full road signs are yet to be replaced.
