Trivia and History

Esso petrol station.
Chiverton Cross Esso stands next to Three Burrows.

Chiverton Cross was a crossroads where the present, smaller roundabout is. There was a large garage on the corner which is now the used car dealership.

Other facilities arrived after the roundabout was built in the 1980s, replacing three cottages. In 1988 the Chiverton Cross Little ChefHistory opened, later to be joined by a Burger King. In 2008 those closed, and became the Starbucks.

Two petrol stations continue to operate side-by-side. The first was an Esso garage named Chiverton Cross, while the second was branded Total and called Three Burrows. Both came to be operated by MFG, and in 2012 Three Burrows was re-branded Esso, creating the unusual situation where two seemingly identical petrol stations trade side-by-side.

In the same year, Chiverton Cross was removed from Ordnance Survey maps.

In January 2018, Cornwall Council granted planning permission to demolish both petrol stations and replace them with one single, larger petrol station. In August 2019, further proposals for a hotel and restaurant development adjacent to the current filling stations was granted. A Rowe's Cornish Bakers store is also expected to open within the adjacent car sales showroom soon.
