Toll Bar
Toll Bar or Tollbar is a common name used across Britain, referring to the to toll gates which used to be found on turnpikes across the country. These were often placed at key junctions, some of which developed hotels or garages.
As a result, there are now many petrol stations named after toll bars. Some of these relate to service areas covered by this site, such as:
- Foston services on the A1, part of a pair known locally as Toll Bar services.
- Further down the A1, Sawtry services was formerly known as Toll Bar.
- Tollgate services on the A2.
