Trivia and History

Shell filling station.
The Shell filling station, pictured in 2009.

The forecourt was developed by Hardys of Telford in the early 1990s, with initial plans being fought against by many local residents in 1993. Residents were against plans for a site at the busy Stirchley Interchange due to accidents occurring regularly at the junction. The site was granted permission on an appeal in June 1993, but residents later reported Wrekin Council to the local government ombudsman, delaying construction of the site.

Despite this local controversy, the site was built as a Gulf forecourt and opened on 14 May 1994. An opening ceremony was held, with Shadow from Gladiators in attendance.

The site was sold to Shell in Summer 1998 following the owners going bankrupt. The site became known as 'Stirchley services' from this point, with signs to that effect at the entrance along, and a sign on the Queensway.

The constrained site was built with an unusual layout, whereby cars need to do almost a full lap before refuelling. If you factor in the fact it's only signed as a service area from the southbound side, the entry involves 540 degrees of looping.

A large parking area to the rear of the sales building was redeveloped in 2022 with two Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging points being added. The two chargers later went live in late 2023 following power supply constraints, with the odd traffic flow layout through the site remaining in place.
