Services opened 2017

Planning and Opening

When the large Lincs Gateway housing estate and business park was built in 2017, space was left for a service station by the A16 roundabout.

The land was divided into six parcels, with the petrol station opening that year in the north-east corner as a large Applegreen forecourt. A Marston's pub and hotel then joined the site in the south-east corner in September 2018, accessed from the same cul-de-sac. This opened on 24 September and takes it name from a Spalding tradition - the Tulip Flower Festival and the Tulip Queen competition.

Applegreen purchased a significant stake of Welcome Break in November 2018 which saw this site become one of the 'trade-offs'. Internally, it became part of the Welcome Break estate in summer 2021, though Applegreen branding continues to be used for the time being.

Welcome Break refer to the site as Spalding services, despite nearby Springfields also claiming that title.

Recent Developments

The remaining land was left vacant for a number of years after the original facilities opened. The Adil Group have since added two drive-thru units in the south-west corner of the site. These opened on 19 August 2022 as a KFC and a Taco Bell, with the latter being part of a new push from Taco Bell to open more roadside sites.

Works commenced in August 2024 on adding yet another drive-thru unit, this time from Wendy's. This unit is set to open in Spring 2025.

Osprey Charging also secured planning permission in September 2024 to add eight electric vehicle charging bays to the back of the pub car park.
