Site opened 2000

The Rheged Centre opened in 2000, on the site of the former Redhills Limekilns. Some of the former limekilns are incorporated into the building design. The amenity building and petrol station share one large, grass roof, which the entry road dives under.

It was first proposed by Westmorland in 1989 as a tourist information centre, outdoor activity area and to provide motorists' facilities. They called the development 'Hills of the North'. It took some time to come to fruition, and has an extremely unusual design for a service area, with an airy building spread over three levels - not to mention the cinema.

The building underwent a major refurbishment during the late 2020 Coronavirus lockdown. The building also later gained a Changing Places facility in January 2024.

The service area is very close to the former Little ChefHistory at Penrith which, accompanied by an on-site Travelodge, acted as an unofficial service area that traffic would pass first when heading to the centre from the M6. This now serves fast food, but still doesn't sell fuel or accommodate HGVs, meaning Rheged continues to be the official service area for the region.
