Trivia and History

The Subway store, pictured in 2020.

Service area opened as a JET 2005
Site closed 2012
Site reopened as a Shell 2014

With plans for a bypass of Nesscliffe in the 1990s, the existing owners of the filling station in Nesscliffe village proposed two filling stations incorporating a restaurant and picnic area on either side of the new road in 2002.

Following the opening of the bypass in 2003, only an eastbound forecourt was developed, opening in 2005. It was branded JET with a SPAR store and 'Food Station' café.

The site completely closed in 2012, but reopened in 2014 as a Shell forecourt, with the café becoming known as the Nesscliffe Pit Stop Café.

Sale to MFG

MFG acquired the site in late 2017 and re-branded the store to Londis. The Nesscliffe Pit Stop Café managed to soldier on until August 2018, when MFG closed it and replaced it with a Subway store in October 2018. Following the Coronavirus lockdowns in 2020, MFG decided to permanently close the Subway store.

MFG applied to build a Starbucks Drive Thru to the north of the filling station in 2020 but this was initially rejected following concerns from Highways England about the exit from the drive-thru lane. New plans were submitted with the drive-thru lane running to the north of the forecourt and exit placed into the rear car park rather than the main forecourt, but permission for this has now lapsed.

MFG also hold permission to add eight MFG EV Power electric vehicle charging bays in the rear car park.
