Trivia and History

Brick building with a 'bolt-on' drive-thru window, with a Starbucks sign on top.
The new Starbucks store utilises the former Little Chef building.

The site was planned in 1987 by Forte, and then followed up by Action 2000. It opened in June 1991 with a Fina forecourt, named Mount Pleasant services. This was joined by the Buckingham branch of Little Chef. There was a plan to build a Travelodge here too, but this wasn't taken forward.

The Little Chef restaurant closed in June 1996 and was converted into a Burger King restaurant. The Little Chef later reopened in 1999 but the whole building later closed again in 2008.

A hotel was proposed again in the early 2000s, with a Travelodge finally opening here on 3 November 2004. The opening of the hotel was commemorated with Travelodge touring a mobile glass box bedroom around the town. The design of the hotel is clearly newer than most of their roadside hotels, making it stand out amongst the rest of their roadside estate.

The forecourt became Total and is now Shell, with the current owners preferring to call it 'Buckingham services'. It is often confused with the EG Group site one mile to the west: that one is not part of an official service area.

The empty Little Chef building was converted into a Starbucks Drive Thru by franchisee 23.5 Degrees in summer 2023, after the building sat dormant for 15 years. The new store opened on 15 December 2023 and features a new 'bolt-on' box to the back of the building to house the drive-thru window. 23.5 Degrees were acquired by Starbucks UK in October 2024, with the store transferring into the company operated estate.

Shell added six electric vehicle charging points behind the forecourt shop under its own solar canopy in 2024, with the chargers going live in April. Be.EV now intends to install six more charging points outside the coffee shop.
