Trivia and History

Planning History

Plans for a service area on the A31 Farnham Bypass were first proposed by BP in 1988, initially being refused but later approved on appeal in 1989. The original plans included an amenity building with 80-seater restaurant, business centre and incorporated shop for the forecourt. A large car park with 75 spaces and a children's play area were also included.

A subsequent plan in 1990 incorporated an existing building on the former site of a water works which dates back to at least the mid-1800s. This was set to become a 'walkers centre' for the nearby Pilgrim's Way and North Downs Way walking trails, with a restaurant in the centre of the site and a filling station to the east of the site.

As a result of the former water works being deemed as an area of conservational interest, due to its inclusion of a large area of wild meadowland, the scheme faced opposition from a group of locals. Despite this, the amended 1990 plan was also granted permission in 1992.

Opening and Recent Changes

The dawn of the millennium saw no service area built on the site. BP had submitted amendments to the 1990 plan in 1999, but it took until 2001 for works on building a filling station to begin.

The filling station opened in early 2002, with the plans for the restaurant and walkers centre on the adjacent land being scrapped. Instead, a large picnic area and footpath links to the local walking routes were included as part of the project.

The site became a BP Connect site in 2008, gaining a M&S Simply Food store and Wild Bean Café offering.
