Trivia and History
The Carlisle Truck Inn claimed to be the UK's first truckstop. It was positioned on Parkhouse Road, accessed from the traffic lights on Kingstown Road. It had 100 beds, a café, cabaret, a shop, a games room, a repair yard and diesel sales.
Over the following 15 years, the owners said they had been advising many of the UK's newer truckstops.
The site was sold to BP Truckstops in the early 1990s, and they became Nightowl in 2002. Nightowl scaled back their operations massively, leaving just Carlisle and Rugby, which are now with the Stobart Group.
When the A689 Carlisle Northern Development Route opened in February 2012, a more direct access from the motorway was created, including an entry ramp from the new road. The Parkhouse Road entry became an exit only.
