Trivia and History

The former Little Chef restaurant, pictured in 2008.

The service area started with a garage on the A680, built in the 1960s. The Rising Bridge branch of Little Chef was built next to it in around 1981, and received competition from McDonald's in the late 1980s.

There were plans in 1991 to add a 36-bed hotel to the site but these were later withdrawn.

The Little Chef closed on 10 January 2012, one of a number of branches deemed to be unprofitable. It was soon demolished to allow the McDonald's car park to be extended.

EG Group opened a Starbucks Drive Thru here on 1 April 2022, on unused land behind the McDonald's restaurant. The new coffee shop is connected to the existing facilities via a new access road through the McDonald's car park.
