The international kebab brand German Doner Kebab opened its first motorway store at Baldock services in December 2023. This attracted considerable interest, as its long opening hours means it's the first restaurant in the UK to offer a doner breakfast menu.
Unlike a traditional kebab shop, the GDK units have a number of touchscreen ordering points, and a wide menu including burgers and Lavazza coffee.
Traditionally, unusual food ideas have struggled to break into the homogenised service station market. Extra called the reaction to GDK "so amazing" that they opened further units at Peterborough and Cambridge in February and March 2025 respectively, with Cobham and Leeds Skelton Lake following in December 2025.
The units at Cambridge and Peterborough incorporate their own seating area, something which is only usually seen at their town centre stores.
