Signage

Upon visiting this site today, I’ve found that no advanced signage is provided except a ‘services’ sign when you’re right upon it therefore I believe it should be removed from the site.

Hi Rich,
I live near this site and have been past it/to it several times and I believe I can justify why it should be kept on the site.
The main reason there is no advance signage closer to the site is because there isn’t enough room. The services are nearby to a previous junction and there are signs on both sides of the road relating to that junction. The services aren’t located too far away from that junction but a full sign is provided.
As well as that, it’s the only service station on the only road between Reading and Basingstoke and it’s quite popular with HGV drivers.

When I come to power, I'm going to make all service stations tell me whether they're official or not. It would make life much easier!
The advance sign that we are looking for is known in the trade as a 2313.1/2313.3/2313.5. The one at Swallowfield is a 2313.2. Technically, yes, this means it doesn't count, but it's not the end of the world... there's a little bit to say about it, the page is already there, it doesn't get very many views at all... I'm easy either way.

Turgis Green

I'm not too sure why Turgis Green was removed. I live quite close to it and know that it is signed - it's also the only petrol station which can be accessed from northbound traffic on quite an important route between Basingstoke and Reading. Barnaby (talk) 19:48, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

I was surprised when Turgis Green was added, because I used to use the road regularly and didn't recall there being any advance signage for the petrol station. I know there is a flag sign on the junction, which is just there to stop people accidentally turning down the lane, but I didn't recall anything to Diagram 2313.1.
Even if it had advance signage, it would have been put there by mistake: 1) Hampshire County Council don't enter into signage agreements for services on their roads, 2) roads with 40mph speed limits are not allowed to have services according to Circular 02/2013. Of course we have added other services which are signed by mistake, but it's worth bearing in mind.
I've now taken a look on Google Street View and can't find any advance signage, unless I'm missing something. There is one petrol station symbol on the advance direction sign (which deliberately doesn't say 'services' because that would have implications) and one flag sign on the junction. This sounds like a case of Services by convenience ("the Gatwick Airport rule").
There's no reason why it can't be added again if there is a reason to. Remember there is a 107 mile gap in signposted services on the A9 so distance is not a concern. The old page described the petrol station in eight words so there doesn't seem to be a lot to say about it, and it received a tiny number of page views so can't be justified by its popularity. Fair enough, you make some understandable points. Admittedly the signage for the petrol station isn’t advance signage - thank you for explaining though. I’ll keep a watch out for other services on the site with the same sort of scenario with regards to signage and try to point them out. Barnaby (talk) 02:58, 18 November 2018 (UTC)
