Trivia and History

The InstaVolt charger, tucked next to the SPAR store.

The unusual name for this service area stems from 'Milton of Strathbogie', the previous name of the town of Huntly.

The filling station was built in the late 1950s, shortly before the bypass of Huntly opened.

The site had been branded BP since opening, and included a SPAR store until 2018 when Certas Energy acquired the site. Certas Energy rebranded the forecourt to Gulf, adding a Londis store as well as an InstaVolt electric vehicle charging point. The store has since rebranded back to SPAR.

On 1 February 2022, Storm Corrie severely damaged the forecourt canopy. The A96 was closed for two days as a result, with the filling station now operating with no canopy - a rare situation these days.

Despite the forecourt having been established for a long time, formal road signs acknowledging it as an official service area were only provided in 2021. The one on the northbound side was then removed less than 12 months later.
