Trivia and History
After the first GRIDSERVE electric forecourt opened at Braintree in 2020, there was some expectation around what they would do next. A few more sites did open at strategic locations which were outside the jurisdiction of this website, until the Stevenage location opened in October 2024, very close to the A1(M) motorway. It is largely a clone of their successful Braintree project.
As there is no petrol filling station, GRIDSERVE Stevenage again falls outside the scope of any official highway designation. The updated policies allow for "EV hubs" on major English A-roads, but motorways are specifically excluded and the A602 isn't major enough. With no guidance available, the local authority have painted an electric vehicle symbol and the word "serv" on the road.
The site won the 'Best Alternative Fuels Outlet' award at the Forecourt Trader Awards, being praised for its 'futuristic look'.
