Trivia and History
Burmah proposed a forecourt on each side of the new A180 dual carriageway in 1987. AJ's proposed to add a pair of their restaurants next to the forecourts, but these were never built.
Both forecourts opened in 1988 with Burmah branding, later passing to Gradebrook Filling Stations who operated them under Total branding in the 2000s. It then rebranded to Gulf in the early 2010s.
In 1997, plans to add a drive-thru diner and 40-bed hotel on the eastbound side were approved but never built.
More recently, Best-One branding was added to the forecourt shops in 2017, and then both sites rebranded to Jet in 2018. The stores were later rebranded to SPAR.
Both sites were sold to Ascona Group in March 2021, who refurbished the site over the Spring, rebranding the stores to Nisa Local and adding Smokin' Bean Coffee machines.
Redevelopment Plans
Ascona have submitted plans to redevelop both facilities here, utilising land next to each filling station which hasn't been used since the sites were built.
Both sides are set to include new HGV parking areas on this additional land, with each set to include a toilet and shower block. Both filling stations will also be demolished, with larger sales buildings and a bakery being added to each side as well as six new EV chargers on each forecourt. The westbound side is also set to gain a truck wash.
Both applications are still under consideration.
