Trivia and History
As early as 1978, land was designated for a north-eastbound service area here, next to the cottages. It was later connected to London Road and had the direct exit back onto the A45 closed.
The restaurant was built by Little Chef, which opened in 1988 and closed in 1996, gaining an additional Burger King unit. It reopened in 1999 and closed again in 2005. Little Chef knew the place as 'Collingtree services', but Shell now refer to it as their Northampton site. Little Chef had operated it in tandem with Grange Farm.
The former Little Chef building was later divided down the middle, becoming a Domino's Pizza store and a sub-let. The Domino's Pizza store claimed to be home to Domino's' 'UK and International Manager of the Year' in 2009.
Shell hold planning permission to demolish the existing sales building, car wash and HGV pumps and erect a new, larger sales building along with wider HGV fuelling lanes. A small HGV parking area is also set to be introduced.
A Toby Carvery and Travelodge are situated next to the service area, but these are not part of the official facilities.
