Pizzaland was a chain of restaurants owned by Grand Metropolitan, formed in the 1960s. It was boosted by the sale of Rank's Pizza Piazza in the early 1990s. In towns around the country it was coming under pressure from larger pizza chains, and standards were falling.
Michael Guthrie created Brightreasons and purchased Pizzaland, committing to improving the quality of service. After Michael Guthrie created Pavilion and established a need to improve the quality of its service areas, he added a Pizzaland restaurant to them all, starting with Aust.
Brightreasons were sold to Whitbread in 1996. At the time they owned Pizza Hut, so the two pizza brands were merged.
