Trivia and History

The lorry park opened in November 1980. It was named Chesterfield Truckstop and was operated by BRS Midlands.

It was one of the largest dedicated truckstops in the country, and due to the high land price, required a considerable investment which took some time to recoup. A series of weekend events were arranged, including car boot sales and Sunday markets.

There was a change of owners in 1994, when it became 'Junction 29 Truckstop'.

The truckstop was crowned 'Truckstop of the Year' in 2010 and 2013 by Truckstop News as well as the Egon Ronay and Keyfuels 'Transport Café of the Year' in 1999.

On 5 August 2019, the site was acquired by fuel suppliers Mabanaft. Junction 29 was intended to be the first of a network of truckstops across the UK.

Following the acquisition of two further truckstops, Mabanaft announced their new Onroute Truckstops branding scheme in September 2021, with Junction 29 becoming the first Onroute site. The site received new signage throughout sporting the new branding as well as a major internal refurbishment with new furniture and digital menus in the café.

Onroute Truckstops can also be found near the M5, A419 and the A180, but M1 J29 is the only one to have road signs on a motorway. These signs pre-date the idea of a truckstop becoming a formal class of facility, but are similar in style to modern truckstop signage.
