Trivia and History
When the A19 opened here in the late 1960s, it opened with a pair of Shell filling stations and the Easington branch of Little Chef. At the time Little Chef were mostly building small diners, but this one was comparatively huge, with dedicated car and HGV parking and a covered footbridge which allowed northbound customers to walk to it.
The Little Chef closed in 1978, but the service area continued to trade as Hawthorn services. One particular road atlas, dated 1990, heavily promoted Easington as one of its only A-road service areas, and the only service area it attributed to "independent operators".
The footbridge and restaurant were demolished in 2002, leaving a large bare area which is now additional parking.
Shell currently hold planning permission to install new Shell Recharge electric vehicle charging points on both sides here.
