Trivia and History

A brick building with a sign saying Café Express.
Café Express.

Crossgates service station dates back to a garage which opened in the 1950s.

The filling station had been operated by Llink Group since at least the 1990s and was previously branded Esso. It later become a Texaco site with a Nisa Local store.

Llink Group sold the site to Ascona Group in late 2020, who refurbished the shop in early December 2021. They added a range of Co-op Food products, alongside a new Tango Ice Blast machine and the latest Nisa Local branding to the shopfront.

Ascona Group submitted plans in May 2023 to redevelop the entire site, demolishing the existing sales building and café and replacing them with one incorporated building with an attached drive-thru lane alongside it. The forecourt pumps, tanks and canopy are all set to be replaced, with new car and jet washes and a launderette 'pod' being added. This proposal was queried by the local council in 2023, with statements saying that details about the drive-thru were not clear enough and that the existing café is popular amongst older locals.

Strictly speaking, the service area is within the 30mph speed limit of the village, so if were being built today it probably wouldn't qualify to be signed as a major road service area. The road signs are already in a poor state of repair.
