East Coat Fuels secured planning permission for a Ballymena services in February 2024. It shouldn't be confused with the prominent Applegreen on Crankill Road, also the A26. There have been some suggestions that it will be branded Ballee service station.
It will be positioned on Ballee Road East, the recently-downgraded A26, and accessed from the Larne Road Roundabout, where the new underpass for Ballymena's strange little M2 is. This means the development will technically be accessed from a motorway, although it's relatively small and it remains to be seen whether the authorities will see fit to signpost it from the tiny motorway. It has been referred to throughout the planning process as a "motorway service area", but this is a common description in Northern Ireland.
Regardless of whether they take advantage of this status or not, this facility is positioned on the edge of Pennybridge Industrial Estate, and may receive more local traffic from around Ballymena than it does long-distance.
There will be three buildings: McDonald's Drive Thru, a fuel sales shop, and an internet café. There will be 152 car parking spaces, four for long vehicles and 12 electric vehicle charging points.
The proposal was revealed to the public in early 2022. A service area was previously planned here with a very similar layout in 2012 by Beechview Developments Ltd. This one would have had a hotel-restaurant in place of the drive thru. It was approved in 2014 but never built.
