Trivia and History

The Uttoxeter Bypass used to end at a junction with the A522 New Road, with a forecourt built in the corner of the junction, which was known as 'New Road service station'. It could be used by both long-distance traffic on the A50 and local traffic on the A522.

When the A50 was extended westwards, the forecourt was somewhat left behind. The entrance now branched off the slip road at the new junction, with the exit leading straight to New Road, but with the option to quickly re-join the A50 via the new roundabout. The footway running around the forecourt gives a clue as to the old line of the A50.

Changes happened again in 2018, when that roundabout was replaced by a new junction. The entry to the forecourt now stemmed directly from the main A50. To avoid confusion, the new signs made it clear that the new junction came after a 'petrol station'. The new road layout also creates one of those curious examples where traffic on the dual carriageway can easily stop, but then faces a short detour on its way back.

Referring to 'petrol stations' is somewhat non-standard for British trunk roads, so a year later additional signs were placed, calling this legacy exit "Services". Thus, while it's not fully signed and it's not really trying to be one, the A50 gained another service station.

Forecourt History

The forecourt has been Shell branded since opening and was redeveloped in 1990 into the site we see today, with the car wash being added during this time.

A jet wash bay located next to the car wash was replaced by four Shell Recharge EV chargers in Summer 2023.
