EG Group were looking at developing a new service area at the Stonehaven Interchange, which was built as part of the new A90 Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route. Planning permission was granted in December 2023.
The spine road that branches off the roundabout on the A90 would lead to a mini-roundabout. This would provide access to a forecourt and a drive thru Starbucks. There would be 8 HGV parking spaces, 70 for cars, 12 electric vehicle charging points and 12 cycle bays.
The forecourt would include a hydrogen refuelling station supplied by Element 2. The car refuelling area would be designed to potentially be converted to 34 more electric vehicle charging points.
The land was previously identified for a supermarket in 2014. EG Group began pursuing it in 2018. While EG Group suspended many planned projects while the company was broken up, many of these are now being pursued by EG On The Move.
On request from Transport Scotland, the service area will have 'Services' signs placed on approach to the roundabout, but there is no word of any advance signage being provided on the approach. Even so, it makes for one of the most comprehensive facilities on the A90.
