A petrol station and a few takeaways next to the A45 isn't what we'd usually classify as a motorway service area, but it is signed from the M1, so it qualifies. With the Cohannon Post Office inside, it really is a community facility by the motorway.

Trivia and Design

Car park and workshop units.
The former workshop units which are accessed through the service area.

There are two turnings into the service area, the first being for the hotel and the second for the petrol station. At the back, the two link up, and are also joined by a small retail park with a few takeaways. You'd be forgiven for thinking that the forecourt is the real 'motorway service area' here, with the surrounding restaurants and hotel just enjoying the exposure, but the motorway sign is clear that they are all what makes up the service area.

In reality even the forecourt looks more like a local facility. It is built with a mock-twee clock tower, like the 'Essex barn' supermarkets, and houses the local post office.

The retail units were built in an old fuelling area in 2010. They were joined to a workshop, which was converted into more retail units in 2012. More retail units may be added, as the surrounding land has been identified as 'prime retail land'.
