Trivia and History

Applegreen.
The old sales shop, pictured in 2017.

The facilities were provided within a small forecourt shop, sometimes called 'Tootenhill services'. It had a Wimpy branch, which became Burger King.

Applegreen demolished the neighbouring Tooten Hill House and its outbuildings in 2018, opening a much larger sales building in its place, with three food units inside. The old building was demolished and used to create a larger parking area.

Following the partnership between Applegreen and M&S Food, their range was added to the shop in March 2024. The Braeburn Coffee unit was accompanied by a full drive thru and 24 hour café, which opened on 17 April 2024, built on the remaining plot of land with its own car park and six charging points. A launch event was broadcast on Radio Nova on 4 May.

Wider Context

In addition to the main service area, there is a Circle K garage just before here, also called Rathcoole, is signposted as a local petrol station, but not a full service area.

A 2014 study by the National Roads Authority noted that the N7 here would eventually be upgraded to become a motorway, and that this work should include a full service area "around Rathcoole or Naas North". It's not clear if reusing the existing facilities would be considered, but in 2016 a number of drawings were produced by Applegreen showing how the access to the service area could be significantly upgraded, if needed.
